The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George Helmstetter (ASN: RA-18349850), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 9 September 1950, in the vicinity of Haman, Korea, an enemy patrol attempted to penetrate the forward positions of an infantry company. Moving forward alone in the face of concerted hostile fire, Private First Class Helmstetter directed such accurate fire with his carbine that the patrol was dispersed, thereby eliminating a serious threat to the security of friendly positions. Private First Class Helmstetter’s conspicuous courage, grim determination and staunch devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
