The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Frederick R. Heinlein (ASN: RA-13272228), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 2d Military Police Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On the evening of that date he and sixteen other men were in position on a hill overlooking the Division Command Post. During an enemy attack, Private Heinlein, whose position was beside a .50 caliber machine gun, saw that an enemy grenade was about to destroy the weapon and its crew. He rushed over to the grenade and picked it up in an effort to throw it away from the gun position. As he was about to throw it back at the attacking enemy the grenade exploded, killing him instantly. His courageous unconcern for personal safety resulted in saving the gun and the lives of its crew members. The gallantry and selfless devotion to his comrades displayed by Private Heinlein reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
