The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Zola L. Heffner (ASN: RA-16370729), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 September 1951, Company L of the 7th Infantry Regiment was holding positions on Hill 284 when the enemy, in estimated battalion strength, unleashed a night attack against the defenders. After two attacks had failed, the hostile force made a third attack which carried them within the company’s positions. Corporal Heffner, a radio operator in the Third Platoon Command Post, receiving the message that the platoon’s right flank was low on ammunition, voluntarily proceeded toward the sector with thirty bandoleers of ammunition. While en-route, two hostile soldiers attacked him, but he killed both in close combat and delivered the ammunition enabling the men on the flank to successfully repulse the enemy. Corporal Heffner’s gallantry, courage, and initiative reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
