    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl N. Heckart (ASN: 19342490), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with as an Aidman with the Medical Company, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near SsangYong, Korea, on 23 August 1950. A muzzle burst of one of the mortars wounded nine men of the mortar squad. Private First Class Heckart, who was serving the units as Aidman, though seriously wounded himself, immediately rendered first aid to the assistant gunner who was most gravely wounded and then proceeded to the assistance of the other men. Heedless of heavy enemy fire, he continued his work until he himself collapsed form loss of blood and shock, and had to be evacuated. Private First Class Heckart’s courage and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the Medical Service.

Heckart, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea in 1950. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
