Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 658 (November 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Jack E. Hebard (ASN: ER-14356021), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 May 1951 in the vicinity of Kosa-ri, Korea. On this date, Company L was encircled and ambushed by a large enemy force firmly entrenched on dominating terrain features, forcing friendly units to withdraw. During the withdrawal, Sergeant Hebard noticed that a forward artillery observer had been wounded by enemy fire and was lying in the midst of enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Hebard left his position of comparative safety to aid the fallen man. Picking up the wounded man, he carried him through the intense hostile fire to the safety of a vehicle. Sergeant Hebard’s bravery in risking his life to save that of his comrade was an inspiration to all witnessing his deed. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Hebard on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
