The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Wayne Darwin Heath (ASN: RA-06658927), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Sergeant Heath was a member of a tank-infantry patrol which had been assigned the mission of reducing an enemy roadblock on the main supply route. When the patrol was subjected to heavy small arms fire, Sergeant Heath remained in his position on a tank and fired upon the enemy with the .50 caliber machine gun. From this position he observed that some of the other members of the patrol had been wounded and were lying exposed to the enemy fire. Disregarding the intense fire to which he was subjected he leaped fearlessly from the tank and started moving the wounded to positions of cover. While engaged in this heroic action he was killed by enemy fire. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Heath reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
