The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert D. Heath (ASN: 0-2209378), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Heath, Platoon Leader of the 2d Platoon, led his men in an attack against heavily fortified enemy positions. As the platoon neared its objective, they were momentarily stopped by devastating enemy mortar, small arms fire, and demolition charges. With complete disregard for personal safety, Lieutenant Heath constantly exposed himself while directing the platoon as it resumed its attack on the enemy positions. Successfully gaining the objective although greatly outnumbered, Lieutenant Heath remained in a vulnerable position directing the actions of his men until he was seriously wounded and evacuated. His determination and devotion to duty were directly responsible for the success of the mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Heath reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
