Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 43 (January 21, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jerry F. Head (ASN: RA-14273252), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 25th Reconnaissance Company, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Shortly after midnight, 27 November 1950, near Ipsok, Korea, Sergeant Head set up his 81-mm. mortar in a rice paddy between two hills to help stop the attack of a numerically superior hostile force. Although exposed to deadly enemy small arms and mortar fire, he stayed with his weapon during the remainder of the night. By his accurate and continuous fire, he inflicted large numbers of casualties among the attackers. After his assistant was wounded, he loaded and fired the mortar himself. By his staunch, valorous determination and notable military ability, Sergeant Head contributed essentially to rout of the enemy force and protection of his own lines. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
