The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stillman E. Hazeltine (ASN: 0-959319), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 November 1951, as the 2d Battalion advanced upon the enemy-held Hill 355, near Kowang-San, Korea, Company F, 2d Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Hazeltine, led the assault. Moving forward in the darkness, the unit made contact with enemy outposts and was subjected to heavy fire from automatic weapons and grenades which wounded the point platoon leader and platoon sergeant. Realizing that the advance must continue, Lieutenant Hazeltine took charge of the platoon and, heedless of his personal safety, led it in a successful attack on the objective. In two successive skillful maneuvers, he ordered supporting fire while personally leading the assault platoons in seizing the objective. Utilizing the foothold gained by the assault company, other battalion units advanced and completed securing the objective. Lieutenant Hazeltine’s gallant and courageous leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 545 (November 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stillman E. Hazeltine (ASN: 0-959319), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, when Company E attacked the enemy-held Hill 425, in the vicinity of Sum Yong-Hyon, Korea, it encountered stubborn hostile resistance. The sweeping counterfire soon pinned the unit down and, when the company commander was wounded, Lieutenant Hazeltine assumed control, faced with the problem of extricating the company from its precarious immobile position and renewing the advance. In order to return effective fire upon the foe, it became necessary to ascertain the exact location of their positions, for having taken complete advantage of natural concealment and having made excellent use of camouflage, the enemy had cleverly hidden their emplacements. To do this, Lieutenant Hazeltine boldly and deliberately revealed himself to draw the enemy fusillade and as they shot at him, he directed destroying fire upon the hostile forces when they disclosed their positions. He then urged his troops to renew their advance and, following his fearless example, the unit rose in the assault, vigorously charging the enemy defenses. During the attack, when he ran out of ammunition for his personal weapon, Lieutenant Hazeltine seized the rifle and cartridges belonging to a dead enemy soldier and, despite his unfamiliarity with the piece, fired it with superior skill, personally slaying eight hostile infantrymen. The attack, vehemently led by Lieutenant Hazeltine, completely routed the enemy from the hill allowing the company to capture and secure the objective. Lieutenant Hazeltine’s brilliant leadership and militant courage reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
