The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Dale W. Hayhurst (ASN: 0-975557), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 March 1951, as the Third Battalion, 65th Infantry was attacking enemy positions near Uijongbu, Korea, Captain Hayhurst, attached to Medical Company, 65th Infantry and acting as Battalion Surgeon for the Third Battalion, set up a forward aid station approximately four hundred yards from the front line. While he was suturing a soldier’s chest wound, enemy artillery shells fell in the immediate vicinity of the station. Although the soldiers in the area took cover, Captain Hayhurst, shielding the wounded man with his own body, continued suturing the serious wound. The exemplary courage and selfless gallantry displayed by Captain Hayhurst reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
