The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John J. Hayduk (ASN: 0-1688784), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 September 1950, near Chinju, Korea, an attack by an infantry unit mounted on tanks was halted when the lead tank struck a mine and hostile forces opened fire with small arms and machine guns. Quickly dismounting, Lieutenant Hayduk deployed his platoon to the enemy’s left flank and began advancing towards the main positions. As the platoon neared the objective he led it in a charge which overran the hostile emplacement. Lieutenant Hayduk’s outstanding leadership, determination and military skill exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
