Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 377 (December 26, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert T. Hayden (ASN: 0-2030439), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 58th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 20 September 1952, Lieutenant Hayden, a forward observer, was assigned the mission of accompanying and providing close artillery support for a friendly infantry unit in attacking and seizing enemy-occupied terrain in the vicinity of Koyangdae, Korea. As the friendly elements neared their objective they were subjected to an intense and accurate concentration of hostile mortar fire, inflicting numerous casualties and disorganizing the men. Unable to locate any infantry officers, Lieutenant Hayden immediately assumed command, reorganized the friendly unit and led the men on toward the objective. Upon reaching the enemy trenches he fearlessly exposed himself to the fierce hostile fire as he directed the men to the most advantageous firing positions to provide security support for a section of the unit assaulting the foe from another sector. When the ever increasing volume of enemy fire made the mission exceedingly difficult, the order was given to withdraw. Although wounded, he remained in precarious positions, constantly exposed to the enemy fire and skillfully directed and assisted in evacuating the wounded during the withdrawal. Lieutenant Hayden’s intrepid actions and inspirational leadership reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
