Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 157 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Floyd E. Hayden (ASN: RA-34005262), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 and 16 August 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. During the period above, his company was defending a key terrain feature which protected the main supply route for the regiment. During the night strong enemy forces made five separate attacks, keeping the positions under intense fire from machine guns and mortars. Although seriously wounded in the first attack, Sergeant Hayden refused to leave and continued his duties as assistant platoon sergeant, rallying his men and supplying them with ammunition. After giving first aid to the wounded, he moved the more seriously wounded to the company command post, repeatedly returning to supply his platoon until dawn when he was so weak by loss of blood from his wound that he was evacuated. The intrepid bravery, inspiring leadership and personal example of fearlessness displayed by Sergeant Hayden reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
