The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Leroy F. Haveman (ASN: US-55077385), United States Army, for heroic achievement on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pis-ri, Korea. On this date Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, was assigned the mission of attacking and securing vital enemy-held positions. In a rear emplacement providing support fire, Sergeant Haveman, an automatic rifleman, realizing that he could deliver more effective fire in a forward position, he joined the assaulting elements. Unmindful of the risk involved, he advanced over the fire-swept area to engage the enemy. He then proceeded to deliver a devastating concentration of fire on the hostile positions. In the ensuing action, Sergeant Haveman assisted in clearing many hostile bunkers during which time the enemy suffered heavy casualties. His initiative and aggressive action were highly responsible for his unit being able to gain its objective with a minimum of friendly casualties. The heroic conduct displayed by Sergeant Haveman on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
