The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Leroy F. Haveman (ASN: US-55077385), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On that date Company B had the mission of securing a vital section of Hill 851 defended by a determined hostile force. As the assault materialized, Sergeant Haveman, under direct enemy observation and fire, advanced fearlessly toward the objective, firing his weapon with deadly accuracy. Although the intense hostile fire inflicted numerous casualties on the assault elements, Sergeant Haveman, undaunted by the risk involved, continued on. During the ensuing action, although painfully wounded, he refused to be evacuated and continued to employ a heavy concentration of fire into the enemy’s midst accounting for a heavy toll of hostile casualties. Sergeant Haveman’s courageous action inspired his comrades to renewed efforts and enabled them to accomplish their mission successfully. His valor was outstanding on a field of battle where bravery was common and will live forever in the hearts of his comrades.
