Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 334 (November 5, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Mills Carson Hatfield (ASN: 0-23741), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 31 July 1952, elements of the 1st Battalion, commanded by Colonel Hatfield, were assigned the mission of assaulting and securing “OP Kelly”, near Jojanha-Ri, Korea. While preparing for the attack, they were subjected to an intense barrage of enemy artillery and mortar fire. Despite the lethal hail of enemy fire, Colonel Hatfield remained at a forward position while he directed the friendly attack. Shortly after the friendly force had reached their objective, the entire area was again subjected to a devastating barrage of enemy fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Colonel Hatfield moved about the shell-torn area, shouting words of encouragement to his men and directing the preparations for an expected enemy counter-attack. Remaining in a precarious position until the enemy counter attack was successfully repulsed and the outpost secured, he then moved about the devastated area to insure that friendly defenses were adequate. Colonel Hatfield’s outstanding gallantry and inspirational leadership were instrumental in the securing of an important position and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
