Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 83 (April 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Joseph F. Hasher (ASN: RA-12124272), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 February 1951 in the vicinity of Hoengsong, Korea. Sergeant Hasher was commanding a tank in a platoon which was supporting an infantry unit’s attack on Hill 166. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he exposed himself to enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire in order to observe enemy positions, direct the fire of his own tank and relay the position to other tanks. This action of Sergeant Hasher was responsible for neutralizing three hostile machine guns and causing great casualties to the enemy. When the enemy fire grew in intensity, he turned over the operation of the .50 caliber machine gun to a comrade and, fully exposed in the turret, engaged the enemy with carbine fire, thus adding to the tank’s fire power. In his heroic action, he was seriously wounded by hostile fire. As a result of his outstanding leadership, enemy fire power was greatly reduced, thus enabling the supported infantry to occupy strategic terrain with a minimum of losses. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Hasher reflects great credit upon himself and reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
