The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Raymond Barnes (ASN: 106163), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 3d Machine-Gun Battalion, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Berzy-le-Sec, France, 18 July 1918. Private Barnes was severely wounded by a shell, but as soon as he regained consciousness he went forward, rejoined his former position in squad, and fought with it until ordered to an aid station by his platoon commander.
