Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 639 (October 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Charles L. Hartman (ASN: RA-13270819), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company B was attacking a well-fortified enemy hill. During the vicious struggle the company received orders to move through friendly lines and secure an enemy infested objective. Sergeant Hartman, a squad leader, successfully maneuvered his squad to contact the enemy. Despite the intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire directed at his unit, Sergeant Hartman led his men in an aggressive assault upon enemy positions with fixed bayonets. After inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy and neutralizing many of their bunkers, Sergeant Hartman reorganized his depleted squad to effectively meet any situation. He continued his courageous offense until he was painfully wounded, which necessitated his evacuation. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Sergeant Hartman reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
