The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) H. B. Hart, Jr. (ASN: 0-1319227), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company L, 3d Battalion, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 September 1950, in the vicinity of Yongnung-ni, Korea. On this date, Lieutenant Hart’s company was ambushed by approximately four hundred enemy. The men were initially shocked and confused. Lieutenant Hart exposed himself to enemy small arms and mortar fire in order to reassemble and direct elements of his unit in the fire fight. He crossed open terrain to an exposed observation point from where he directed artillery fire on the enemy. He was under fire throughout this time. Parts of his radio were shot away, but he calmly continued to direct his men until he received orders directing his unit to withdraw. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Hart reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
