The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lenvil Dee Harris (ASN: US-55055868), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date Company C was in the attack upon a well-fortified enemy-held hill. Private Harris realizing the need for close supporting fire and with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved his mortar upon the ridge line to an exposed position. From this point, he commenced firing upon enemy positions, inflicting numerous hostile casualties and, in spite of the intense enemy fire, he continued in this manner. During the ensuing action he was fatally wounded by the enemy fire. Through his self-sacrificing devotion to duty, friendly forces were able to accomplish their mission successfully with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Harris on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
