The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Jack D. Harris (ASN: US-54066506), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Wondang-ni, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Harris, an assistant squad leader, was advancing up an enemy held hill when his squad encountered an intense barrage of enemy fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Harris picked up an automatic rifle and charged the enemy emplacement. Evading the hostile fire, he stormed the position, silencing the enemy weapon and killing five enemy soldiers. As a result of Sergeant Harris’ courageous and selfless action, the squad renewed its advance and successfully completed its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Harris is in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
