Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 828 (December 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Gordon F. Harris (ASN: RA-14390402), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Hang-hyong, Korea. On this date an air strike was called in to aid Company I in eliminating several enemy bunkers, which had excellent fields of fire upon friendly troops. With the forward elements so close to the enemy positions it was difficult for the pilots to distinguish between friendly and enemy troops. Private Harris, undaunted by the intense enemy fire, unhesitatingly carried an air panel to a forward position and enabled the pilots to detect the enemy. His courage in braving the hostile fire to accomplish his mission was greatly responsible for the success of the air strike and encouraged his comrades to rout the few remaining hostile forces. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Harris on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
