Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 828 (December 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William H. Hare (ASN: RA-12369094), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, [then attached to Company E], 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date while Private Hare, a radio operator, was with the machine gun section, he heard an urgent message from a friendly unit in a forward position. The unit was locked in combat with a hostile force and was in dire need of ammunition. With complete disregard for his own safety, he voluntarily secured a supply of ammunition and advanced forward. Moving over the hazardous terrain under continuous enemy fire, Private Hare successfully delivered the ammunition. His courageous action was highly responsible for the success of the friendly unit in its mission. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Hare on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
