The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Alexander J. Barbier (ASN: 1595630), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 356th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bantheville, France, 22 October 1918. While engaged in a raid on enemy positions, Private Barbier was painfully wounded in the head, but refused to go to the rear, remaining on duty with his platoon and taking an active part in the action for 24 hours after being wounded.
