The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Walter D. Hanson (ASN: RA-13277109), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18-19 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that night the mission of Company E and elements of Company K was to assault Hill 266, “Old Baldy”, and drive the enemy forces from their positions. During that assault Company E was ambushed and trapped between fanatical grenade throwing hostile forces above on the left of them and vicious grazing fire from six enemy machine guns, small arms, and other automatic weapons to the front and right flank. Overwhelmingly outnumbered, the unit began a withdrawal to a blocking position some 1800 yards away from enemy held “Old Baldy”. Sergeant Hanson upon hearing this, left the comparative safety of the Battalion Command Post and proceeded to the blocking position, immediately setting about to reorganize the troops, distribute ammunition, and aid in the evacuation of the wounded. With complete disregard for personal safety he then crossed and re-crossed the fire swept terrain, bringing the wounded back to the evacuation point, refusing to rest until he was assured that all of the wounded had been accounted for. The superb leadership and encouraging action displayed by Sergeant Hanson exerted a profound influence upon the conduct of the Company, and his tireless efforts saved the lives of many men. Sergeant Hanson’s outstanding gallantry in action and his inspiring leadership reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
