Department of the Army, General Orders No. 2 (April 18, 1980)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer Michael J. Hanno, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving with Troop D, 3d Armored Squadron, 5th Air Cavalry Regiment, 1st Aviation Brigade, on 29 April 1970. On that date, Warrant Officer Hanno was serving as pilot of an armed helicopter during Allied airmobile operations deep in enemy territory. Throughout the day, Warrant Officer Hanno aggressively attacked and destroyed numerous small arms and anti-aircraft positions. Despite heavy enemy fire, he continued to deliver extremely accurate and effective rocket strikes. Disregarding the danger to which he was constantly exposed, he was an inspiration to his comrades and to the friendly ground forces. Through his skill and professionalism, he contributed to a major defeat of enemy forces. Warrant Officer Hanno’s exemplary actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
