The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Milo K. Hanks (ASN: US-56094663), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kongdong, Korea. On that date during an attack on vital enemy-held positions, Company I was pinned down by the intense fire from a hostile emplacement. Sergeant Hanks, realizing the seriousness of the situation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, single-handedly assaulted the bunker. With his rifle he employed a heavy volume of fire and upon reaching the emplacement, proceeded into it with fixed bayonet and succeeded in killing the enemy soldiers. Through his courageous actions, friendly units were able to continue the assault and rout the remaining hostile strongholds. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Hanks on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
