Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 9532 (August 7, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles Odean Hamilton, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Hamilton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 1 July 1969, while serving as a squad leader with Company C, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and clear mission in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. While moving through dense jungle, Sergeant Hamilton’s lead element came under intense small arms fire. Immediately he placed his men in a good defensive position. While the attack continued, Sergeant Hamilton moved through the area distributing ammunition to his men. He then moved to a forward position to gain a better observation point and from this position he directed aerial rocket artillery. While in this hazardous position, Sergeant Hamilton was mortally wounded. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
