    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Ambrose B. Hammerel (ASN: RA-37177414), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. Private Hammerel was a member of a motorized patrol which was ambushed by a large enemy force. the enemy, from positions on commanding ground, subjected the patrol to intense fire from three sides and forced its withdrawal. Private Hammerel voluntarily remained behind, fearlessly engaging the overwhelming enemy force with rifle fire. Under the concentrated hostile fire, he intrepidly held his position, inflicting heavy losses upon the enemy while his patrol successfully disengaged. When last observed by his comrades he was defiantly resisting the charging enemy with deadly rifle fire. Three days later, his body was found in the position he had held. The area around him was littered with enemy dead. The gallantry and selfless devotion to his comrades displayed by Private Hammerel reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
