Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 63 (March 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Jesse T. Hammack, Jr. (ASN: RA-4412450), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Sergeant Hammack’s company was under heavy attack by a large enemy force which succeeded in overrunning a portion of the company position and establishing a strong point on the highest ground in the sector. From this commanding terrain the enemy swept the company area with intense small arms and grenade fire, causing heavy casualties. Realizing that the enemy must be driven from the position, Sergeant Hammack picked up a light machine gun and, firing from the hip, advanced upon the hostile strong point. He continued his undaunted charge up the fire-swept slope, inflicting great casualties upon the enemy and forcing them, with his accurate marching fire, to begin a withdrawal. During his heroic, single-handed assault he was struck and killed by hostile fire. As a result of his intrepid action the company succeeded in regaining the high ground and restored its lines. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Hammack reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
