The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Kaye D. Hamilton (ASN: RA-17313391), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 February 1953 in the vicinity of Sami-chon, North Korea. Upon hearing that a friendly patrol had been hit by a numerically superior enemy force, Sergeant Hamilton volunteered to join a support patrol as they moved into the combat area. Intercepting the enemy as they were removing their dead and wounded, Sergeant Hamilton, accompanied by three other men, unhesitatingly opened fire and rushed the enemy. Advancing in the face of the enemy’s counterfire, he killed at least five of the foe and wounded several others. When his ammunition was exhausted, he seized an abandoned enemy weapon and continued his bold assault, inflicting innumerable casualties upon the enemy and forcing them to withdraw. He then voluntarily assisted in the evacuation of the friendly casualties, undoubtedly saving many lives. Sergeant Hamilton’s gallantry in action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
