The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John Carroll Hall (ASN: 0-2203606), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 15 December 1950 in the vicinity of Sinsang-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Hall, a forward observer of his battery, was with a platoon of infantry from the 7th Infantry engaged in an intense fire fight against an overwhelmingly numerically superior enemy. Lieutenant Hall courageously directed artillery fire upon the enemy until his radio was damaged but, instead of returning to the rear with his forward observer team to repair the radio, he remained with the infantry platoon utilizing its communications. Even after the platoon was surrounded by the enemy, isolating it, he boldly persevered in directing artillery fire repulsing repeated attacks. Finally the platoon was overrun by concentrated enemy efforts. Lieutenant Hall’s courage and versatility on this occasion inspired his comrades and reflects great credit upon himself. His selfless devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
