The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Harold L. Hall (ASN: 0-2262290), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. Lieutenant Hall was platoon leader of the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, which had been overrun and disorganized during a heavy enemy attack. With the enemy driving toward the Regimental Command Post, Lieutenant Hall dashed through the intense enemy fire, organized his scattered men, and withdrew them to a secondary defense line. When he was ordered to withdraw his unit to a reserve battalion’s positions, Lieutenant Hall accomplished this mission without a single casualty in his platoon. Upon his own initiative he organized the retreating men for a counterattack upon the enemy. Volunteering to accompany them in the attack under another officer, Lieutenant Hall moved under heavy concentrations of automatic weapons and mortar fire to rally the men. When the commanding officer was killed, Lieutenant Hall immediately assumed command and led the attack, sweeping the enemy from the path of advance and recapturing the Command Post. When the enemy counterattacked, he led a slow and tactical withdrawal, maintaining such a degree of order and discipline under intense machine gun fire that the enemy was unable to follow. The gallant conduct displayed by Lieutenant Hall reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
