Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 344 (November 21, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas J. Hadley (ASN: US-51107732), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the night of 16 April 1952, a patrol from Company K, 3d Battalion, to which Private Hadley was attached, was assigned the mission of assaulting an enemy occupied outpost near Wang-jang, Korea, and capturing a prisoner for purposes of intelligence. As the patrol advanced toward the objective, it was suddenly attacked by a large enemy force, resulting in several friendly casualties. While the friendly patrol was returning the enemy fire, Private Hadley, with complete and utter disregard for his personal safety repeatedly exposed himself to the intense and deadly hostile fire as he fearlessly moved across the fire-swept terrain, rendering aid and comforting the wounded. While going to the aid of a fallen comrade, Private Hadley was wounded in the leg, rendering him unable to walk. Refusing medical aid and despite his intense pain, he managed to reach his fellow soldier by crawling over the treacherous terrain and through the heavy enemy fire. Only after all possible aid had been given to each man and he had assisted in the evacuation of the wounded, did Private Hadley accept treatment for his own wounds. Private Hadley’s gallantry and selfless actions reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
