The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] James D. Gwin (ASN: US-55060995), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an attack on a heavily fortified enemy-held hill, Private Gwin advanced to the most forward elements of his unit to observe the enemy and direct the fire of his 60-mm. mortar section. Noticing that a group of men near his position were pinned down by hostile fire, he secured an automatic rifle and commenced firing upon the enemy positions. Completely disregarding his own safety, he remained exposed to the intense enemy fire and inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy. He continued in this courageous manner until his comrades had withdrawn to better defensive positions. His cool behavior and dauntless courage were an inspiration to all who witnessed his action and undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Gwin on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
