Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 455 (October 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James C. Gutherie (ASN: RA-13349316), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, an enemy force of approximately two battalions powerfully attacked Company C near Yong Won-ni, Korea, and after a fiercely contested firefight compelled the unit to withdraw to alternate positions. After reaching the new area, Private Guthrie learned that a wounded comrade had been unable to leave his forward position and faced probably capture by the enemy. Unhesitatingly, Private Guthrie ran back through the area, still under fire and rapidly becoming infested with numbers of hostile soldiers, to the place where the stricken man lay. Lifting him, he placed the hapless soldier over his back and carried him to safety. This voluntary and bold deed successfully accomplished, Private Guthrie discovered that, during the rapid withdrawal, his squad had not been able to bring its recoilless rifle to the rear. Realizing the danger of allowing the weapon to fall into enemy hands, he raced once again through the embattled sector to the gun’s location. Aware that the proximity of the enemy and the fierce crossfire would render it impossible to carry the cumbersome weapon to the company perimeter, Private Guthrie destroyed it with a hand grenade. The selfless gallantry and daring actions exhibited by Private Guthrie reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
