Frank Gunn graduated in 1941 as President of his class from the University of Georgia with a BSA degree in Plant Pathology and was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant of Infantry in the U.S. Army. After service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he retired as a U.S. Army Brigadier General.
