The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George S. Guillow (ASN: RA-17288418), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 4 October 1951, while attacking a well-entrenched foe on Hill 281, near Chungse-ri, Korea, the Second Platoon of Company A was halted and pinned down by a hail of enemy machine gun fire. Refusing to take cover, Private Guillow, an automatic rifleman in the assault platoon, voluntarily rushed through the intense hostile fire toward the emplacement, from which most of the hostile fire emanated. Hostile bullets cut off his ammunition belt; procuring another, and resolutely continuing his fearless advance, he ignored a painful head wound to move within point blank range of the enemy emplacement, and with accurate bursts of fire, destroyed the enemy weapon and its operator. Private Guillow’s gallant action which permitted the whole platoon to advance and seize its objective reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
