Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 213 (June 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] William A. Gros, Jr. (ASN: RA-18275033), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 30 March 1951, near Anhung-ni, Korea, Sergeant Gros’ platoon had been attacked by a large enemy force and was in the process of withdrawing when one of the squad leaders was seriously wounded. Heedless of the fierce enemy fire, Sergeant Gros ran approximately one hundred yards through bursting mortar fire to administer first aid to the wounded soldier. In this action Sergeant Gros became a prime target for the enemy, but, without regard for his own life, he placed the injured man across his back and fired his carbine from the right hip, as he ran towards safety. Later, in the engagement as an enemy patrol attacked the company perimeter two men were wounded in a listening post outside the company line. Sergeant Gros, voluntarily, moved to their position and brought the men back to the relative safety of the perimeter where he administered necessary first aid. Sergeant Gros’ gallantry and bravery when faced by extreme danger reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
