The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Luther Griffith (ASN: RA-34005759), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950 in the vicinity of Somin-dong, Korea. On that date the rear installations of his battery were attacked by a strong enemy force supported by mortar and automatic weapons fire. Sergeant Griffith, the battery supply sergeant, seeing his comrades withdrawing, with complete disregard for his personal safety, elected to remain with his supply truck. Although he was in the path of the enemy attack and was armed with only a pistol, he covered the withdrawal of his comrades by killing two enemy machine gunners who had set up their weapon near his position. Although completely surrounded, Sergeant Griffith remained in his position and continued firing until his comrades attacked and pushed the enemy back. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Griffith reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
