The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal George H. Griffith, Jr. (ASN: RA-19333075), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-dong, Korea. On that date Corporal Griffith, radio operator for his Battalion Commander, was at the forward regimental command post when that area was attacked and overrun by an overwhelming enemy force. Under intense hostile fire, he was forced to close his set and move to another area. He attempted to contact a friendly rifle company to appraise them of the situation to their rear. His attempt to gain contact was unsuccessful because of adjacent hill masses. Voluntarily he advanced through heavy enemy mortar fire to a position directly in the line of fire, from where he was able to contact the rifle company. As he exposed himself, with complete disregard for his personal safety, he was struck down by enemy small arms fire, which killed him instantly. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Griffith reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
