The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James W. Griffin (ASN: 0-1290064), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company G, 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action in Germany, on 6 March 1945. During fierce enemy counterattacks on the town of Schomerich, Germany, Captain Griffin repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire and by his personal example of heroism inspired his men to repulse the advancing enemy forces. Although suffering from temporary blindness he remained with his men and courageously adjusted friendly artillery fire on enemy positions. Captain Griffin’s cool leadership and unflinching devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
