The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant John Dale Grieve (ASN: 0-2212053/6858354), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. After a rifle company had attained its objective, it became necessary for the company commander to send a messenger back to the battalion command post with all information obtained during the attack. First Sergeant Grieve was selected for this important mission. Although at the point of exhaustion he traversed the sniper-infested terrain and delivered the information. When another company was ordered to advance, Sergeant Grieve volunteered to serve as scout and lead the column. At one instance during the advance Sergeant Grieve was suddenly fired on by an enemy automatic-rifleman. He took cover and returned the fire with his sub-machine gun until the weapon jammed. He then borrowed a rifle from a companion and eliminated the enemy, enabling the advance to continue. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (September 18, 1950), Amended by G.O. 55 (1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Dale Grieve (ASN: 0-2212053), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 27 August 1950 at Hyong-Pung, Korea. In the early morning hours of 27 August 1950, Lieutenant Grieve was the assistant leader of a reconnaissance patrol in force against an enemy strong point located on Hill 409, near Hyong-Pung, Korea. As the patrol closed with the enemy they were subjected to intense automatic weapons fire and elements of the patrol were trapped and pinned down. Lieutenant Grieve, on his own initiative, and with the patrol leader too far away to control that side of the action, organized the men with him for a flanking movement. Although wounded and suffering from loss of hearing from a concussion, Lieutenant Grieve, with complete disregard for personal safety, deliberately exposed himself to the enemy in order to draw their fire away from the remainder of the patrol. In so doing he succeeded in pinning down the enemy with his own fire and enabled the trapped members of his patrol to break out and made possible their successful withdrawal. Lieutenant Grieve’s intrepid courage and outstanding leadership in this action reflect great credit upon himself, and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
