The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas A. Grey (ASN: 0-1299877), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company I, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sanjung-ni, Korea, on 4 February 1951. During a withdrawal his company was covering the movement of the rest of the battalion. In order to better control the actions of his company he took a position with the rear most elements of his company. With complete disregard for safety he constantly exposed himself to heavy enemy small arms fire by moving from position to position to direct the deployment and fire of his men. When the enemy threatened to move in on the flank of his column he personally led a daring counterattack inflicting many casualties and forcing the enemy to give ground. Although under constant pressure from frequent attacks throughout the entire withdrawal he maintained complete control of his company at all times and enabled the remainder of the battalion to withdraw to more favorable positions with a minimum number of casualties. Captain Grey’s courageous actions and exemplary leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Infantry.
