Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 857 (December 14, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert L. Gresham (ASN: US-56147057), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kongdong, Korea. On this date the forward elements of Company A were caught in a deadly enemy crossfire, which pinned down the unit and inflicted numerous friendly casualties. Private Gresham, seeing the wounded about him, exposed himself to the enemy fire and made repeated trips evacuating his seriously wounded comrades to safety. While returning from one of these trips, he observed a wounded man lying helpless from a serious leg injury. Without hesitating and disregarding his personal safety, Private Gresham crawled to the side of his comrade and delivered effective fire on the enemy while evacuating him to safety. His courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of many of his comrades. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Gresham on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
