    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 285 (July 16, 1951), amended by G.O. 320 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas W. Greer (ASN: 0-2202338), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, an enemy force attacked I Company’s positions on Hill 860, near Tokko-ri, Korea, from the rear. As the first savage attack was repulsed, Lieutenant Greer saw that the focal point of the assault had been considerably weakened due to the heavy casualties incurred. Quickly organizing a squad from his own platoon, he led them to the area of the company and moved about placing each man in position, in the face of deadly enemy fire. Lieutenant Greer deployed his squad in such a skillful manner and directed their fire so effectively, that his small force was able to repel the enemy’s many frenzied charges. In the course of the action, the brave officer was wounded, but he carried on until he was certain that the company perimeter had been stabilized. Lieutenant Greer’s inspiring gallantry and exemplary leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
