Although enemy artillery fire was falling in his immediate vicinity, Lieutenant Chapman, with calm and confident attitude, remained at his post maintaining the necessary communications with front line elements and higher headquarters. During this time the operations tent was shredded by shrapnel and the clothes of Lieutenant Chapman were torn by flying metal, but he ably directed and coordinated the activities of his section efficiently. Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 100 (May 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ezra Greenfield (ASN: 0-62471), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 and 4 March 1951 in the vicinity of Yongnang-ni, Korea. On 3 March 1951 his company was assaulting enemy defensive positions located on high ground. By aggressive leadership, he moved his platoon to within a short distance of the objective. During that night and the following day the enemy counterattacked his position on five occasions. Displaying complete disregard for the intense enemy fire and showers of hand grenades which fell within the perimeter, he moved from position to position, encouraging his men and stationing himself at the most vulnerable points of his platoon’s position. He also acted as a forward observer for artillery and heavy mortars, directing and adjusting fire on the enemy a short distance to his front. As a result of his heroic leadership his platoon held the strategic ground, the loss of which would have made the position of his company and adjacent units untenable. The heroism displayed by Lieutenant Greenfield reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Illinois.
