The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Richard C. Greene (ASN: RA-15418055), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, a numerically superior enemy force launched a determined attack upon Hills 287 and 312, held by Company A, 1st Battalion, near Popsu-dong, Korea. The Third Platoon, becoming the focal point of the assault, was subjected to intense enemy fire from three directions as hostile troops advanced upon its positions. When forward members of the platoon sought cover, Sergeant Greene and a companion rushed forward despite the acute danger, manned the position and beat back two enemy charges killing 35 hostile soldiers. After the second charge, other members were organized and came to the assistance of Sergeant Greene and his companion in time to repulse a third and final enemy assault. Sergeant Greene’s gallantry and courageous devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
