(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Martin Levering Green (ASN: 0-20720), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with an Artillery Unit of the SEVENTH Army Corps, during the invasion of Normandy, France, in 1944. Landing on the beach at Normandy, as Infantrymen slowly advanced from the beach, Lieutenant Colonel Martin and his artillery unit were close to the front lines, firing artillery to suppress the enemy. As the infantry advanced, he assisted with the transport of the wounded and in one instance, with complete disregard for his own life, he rushed to aid several wounded men pinned down by sniper fire, providing medical care and human comfort until he could safely transport them. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Green, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
