The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lloyd W. Green (ASN: RA-12283827), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chudong-Ni, Korea, on 1 January 1951. Private First Class Green’s company had been under repeated furious attacks by an enemy force of overwhelming numbers and was ordered to withdraw to more defensible positions. During the withdrawal his platoon was assigned the mission of covering the movement. As the troops moved out of their positions they were met by intense fire from a strong enemy force which had infiltrated to the rear under cover of a heavy fog. Realizing the gravity of the situation he unhesitatingly left his position of relative safety and moved to an exposed position on the crest of a small hill. From this vantage point he poured a deadly volume of machine gun fire into the ranks of the attacking enemy. When his ammunition had been expended he returned to his former position to replenish his supply. While so doing he was seriously wounded by enemy fire, but displaying outstanding tenacity and devotion to duty he struggled on to his gun where he again fired with deadly effect. Not until the last man of his company had safely withdrawn did he leave his perilous position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Green, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
